Growing up, we used to spend every second Christmas with my father’s side of the family at Ouma’s house in Hermanus, in the Western Cape, South Africa.

She lived just a stone throw away from Voëlklip Beach, a popular and exquisite little paradise amongst towering rocks and wild seas. Summer days were long and us Zululanders couldn’t get over our luck that the sun only went down at 8:30pm, whereas from our part of South Africa, we had to settle for a sun that was gone by 6pm! It was just part of the greater miracle of what our Hermanus holidays represented for us.

However, this did not go down so well with my very time-savvy Ouma. Our enthralment blinded us to dinnertime, which often caused her to march right down to the beach – still with the kitchen apron on –and call us all back out. Being dressed and sitting at that dinner table was Absolutely Everything. 

But the way of the wild tides, currents and rocks were the beat to which our circadian rhythms danced. The way the light glistens on the white foam of those incredibly icy waters, was like something from another planet that we just couldn’t bear to part with.

Time ceases to exist when seeing my own Australian-born boys and surrounding holidaymakers fully immerse themselves in these very same waters at Voëlklip, where Belonging becomes a collective, entrancing experience that crosses a continuum of generations, time and continents.
