Shortly after I arrived in Australia in Oct 2007, I was experiencing the mad rush home after work from out of the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. As I was waiting for my tram, amongst all this chaos, there was this vision of a woman sitting on the stairs, the pleats of her skirt burning bright orange against the classic cream stairs of Bourke Street Mall. Around her, there was a mad rush of The World In A Loud Hurry, everyone chasing their ultimate destination: home.

I was still questioning Home, as my heart was in two places since I left my motherland behind. However, when I saw her, I found home in her simplicity amongst the disarray, being emerged in a book, with her hair in a classic bun complementing her white, silk blouse. The uncertainty of where I yet belong softened its edges.

For more than a decade, I’ve kept that photo on my pinboard, knowing I’d have to do it justice someday.

Hoping I have found a way to do just that, I here present how a book can ground us regardless of what is happening in the world around us. I missed my tram that day, but I was already home.
