In early 2024, devastating fires swept through the Grampians (Victoria, Australia), blackening vast stretches of wild country and displacing families as homes were lost to the flames. Not long after, I spent a week in Halls Gap at the annual Grampians Texture Art Retreat, learning the practice of Gelli-Plate printing.
Yet, amid that scarred landscape, life was already returning. Tender green leaves unfurled from the darkest branches; luminous new growth glowed against the ash-strewn earth. It was a sight that stopped me in my tracks—a vivid reminder of nature’s fierce and enduring resilience.
I visited in autumn, when some of those courageous new leaves had already begun to turn with the season. I gathered the fallen ones to see preserve their memory in my Gelli-Plate prints.
This design grew from from loss and renewal, from courage after the fire, and from the quiet, radiant promise that life will find its way back.
