This is a deeply personal piece. I met my dear then-92-year old friend, June Engish and her Magic House during a wildly transformational chapter of both our lives. With her late husband, Kevin, she had spent decades lovingly shaping this extraordinary mudbrick home in Eltham, where fine craftsmanship and artistic discernment seemed to live in every corner.
There, I found one of June’s handmade treasures: a leadlight window holding a dragonfly. To me, it became a small and stirring omen. Dragonflies spend most of their lives unseen beneath the water, before emerging for a brief, brilliant flight. They remind me that the slow, hidden work of becoming—healing, learning, enduring—is never wasted.
When I met June, I felt she was living in her final dragonfly season: luminous, wise, and still full of wonder. I was the nymph, learning through her resilience that one day I might find my own wings.
