All through the 3 years of Melbourne’s strict Covid lockdowns, my son, Liam Van Der Merwe watched me work on creating my contemporary collage pieces for my first solo exhibition, “Longing & Belonging” (Nov 2022).

Liam developed a keen interest in this discipline and started studying under me as I moved into my Montsalvat studio post-lockdown. He meticulously practised the finer techniques of composition, cutting, sourcing materials from vintage almanacs, art and children’s books from long-forgotten bygone eras.

Liam eventually created a piece he felt at peace with, which is Bluescape.
